50 lb difference

From the July 2015 to Feb. 2016, I lost 50 pounds!

I’m a happy teacher in my 30’s living in the mountains with my family. We lead a low-key kind of life. We have quite a few animals; some are pets, and some are farm animals. My son says you can tell the difference because, “We don’t eat pets.” I really want to be very outdoorsy, and I love canoeing, kayaking, and camping.

I often used to feel that I was too fat, too old, or too tired to do the things I love and be the person I want to be. In July of 2015, I encountered a blog about a woman who walked, not just 1, but 2 half marathons while weighing more than my 230lbs despite being my same height (5’4”). She was also very close to my age. It caused me to have one of those really profound head-slap moments when you realize that everything you thought you knew might just be completely wrong. It was the first time I ever faced proof (without excuses about how different that person or situation was) that a person could change their life!

This blog is my journal through the process of rethinking everything I thought I knew about myself while growing, or shrinking, 🙂 into the person I want to be!

Since I teach middle school in a VERY small community, I’m choosing to keep this blog anonymous to relieve concerns I would have if any of my students were to find this. Middle school students are an inquisitive bunch, and I try to balance exposing them to the “real world” with preserving their childhood until they develop the emotional maturity to handle more adult content. This site is anonymous, so that I can be open and honest instead of keeping topics middle school appropriate. I’d love to share my journey with online future friends who have traveled, or are currently traveling down this road.

Everyday, I look forward to checking this site. I’ve usually thought about what I want to write and share throughout the day, but when it comes time to take that first peek, I’m most excited to read comments left here! Through your comments, I’ve met people I think of as friends, I’ve found support on my toughest days, I’ve been gifted with ideas and inspiration to help me overcome the challenges I face on this journey, and I love having people with whom I can celebrate my successes!

Your company has made me kinder, more thoughtful, and ultimately more successful.

THANK YOU!

If you have any questions that you would prefer to ask away from the public comments section, or if you just want to say, “Hi!” on a more personal level, please feel free to email me! I’d also love connect with any other runners using Smashrun. I’m happy to share my real identity via email, so that we can be running friends.

  1. Good luck! You can do anything if you set your mind to it! 🙂 I am super, super jealous you live in the mountains. I would really love that, but I think my mom would never forgive me if I moved too far away. I do live near the beach, though, which is the next best alternative.

If you like the outdoors, definitely check out 52 Hike Challenge. http://www.52hikechallenge.com/

The story behind it is on this page (it’s kinda hard to find on the site, so): http://www.52hikechallenge.com/about-karla-phil/

I stumbled upon that I think it was early November. I am definitely doing the challenge. I’m currently injured, but as soon as I get better I’m going to start. Anyhow, I thought you might be interested to try it out one day!

  2. Hi Lucy,
I just stumbled upon your website after reading about success stories from another site, and I have to say that your blog and your achievements are inspiring. You have given me hope that anything is possible with hard work and determination. I love your posts and find that I can relate to them. Please keep doing what you’re doing, inspiring other people like me, and good job on everything you’ve accomplished! I wish you all the best.

    • Um… well… yes… but… well… only about every three years??
I know it’s terrible, and I should go every year (every woman should – seriously!). But I hate doctors. I’ve had a few bad ones that made me feel judged and stupid. I can’t say that I’ve ever had one I felt comfortable with, let alone one that I actually felt was my partner or on my team working toward my health. So I don’t go as often as I should.

  3. Hey, thanks for writing this blog! I am also a teacher in a rural community who plans her runs to avoid angry dogs, and I have been struggling to lose the 70ish pounds of baby weight since the baby was born six years ago. You make it seem possible!

    • Welcome! I must confess that I was shocked to discover that it is, in fact, possible to lose weight (seriously – this was a major revelation! I’m still not fully convinced that it’s possible to keep it off, but… who knows. I’m certainly going to try!).
